Chief Operations Officer (COO)

Position Type: Volunteer
Reports To: CEO

Purpose:
The Chief Operations Officer is responsible for overseeing the operational functions of APPVA, ensuring the smooth delivery of programs, member services, and organisational initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate day‑to‑day operational activities across the organisation.
  • Represent APPVA at national commemorative events when required.
  • Represent APPVA to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) across the National Consultation Framework
  • Support internal teams and ensure alignment with APPVA values and mission.
  • Support financial planning and resource allocation in collaboration with the Treasurer.
  • Provide regular updates to the CEO on operational performance, risks, and resourcing needs.
  • Assist with governance, compliance, and risk management processes.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Strong organisational and leadership skills.
  • Experience in operations management.
  • Ability to coordinate dispersed teams and manage volunteer workloads.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of veterans’ issues or military service (required).

Estimated Time Commitment

  • Approximately 10 hours per week (variable).

Treasurer

Position Type: Volunteer
Reports To: CEO

Purpose:
The Treasurer is responsible for managing the financial affairs of APPVA, ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date financial records.
  • Manage banking, payments, and receipts for the organisation.
  • Prepare annual budgets and present financial reports to the Executive and membership.
  • Ensure compliance with governance standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., ACNC, state associations laws).
  • Coordinate annual audits or financial reviews.
  • Provide financial advice to the CEO regarding planned activities and funding needs.
  • Support grant applications through the Secretary

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience with bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management.
  • Strong attention to detail and high standards of accountability.
  • Familiarity with Xero is desirable.
  • Understanding of NFP compliance requirements (preferred).

Estimated Time Commitment

2 hours per week (variable and increases during reporting periods).

Sponsor Engagement Team Member

Position Type: Volunteer
Reports To: CEO

Purpose:

The Sponsor Engagement Team supports the organisation by building and maintaining relationships with corporate partners, donors, and supporting stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying and approaching potential sponsors or funding partners.
  • Support development of sponsorship proposals, partnership packages, and engagement materials.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with existing sponsors, ensuring obligations are met.
  • Represent APPVA professionally in outreach activities, events, or presentations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to promote sponsor visibility and benefits.
  • Track sponsor engagement activities and maintain accurate contact records.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Confidence in relationship‑building roles.
  • Experience in fundraising, sponsorship, marketing, or community engagement (preferred).
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team.

3-4 hours per week, depending on campaign activity.

Current Issues Cell – Team Member

Position Type: Volunteer
Reports To: CEO

Purpose:
The Current Issues Cell monitors, researches, and responds to emerging issues affecting APPVA members, providing advice and support to the CEO and Research Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Triage membership issues and assist with actioning them through the relevant department.
  • Engage with members to understand current challenges faced by the veteran community.
  • Collaborate with other APPVA teams to support advocacy and communications.
  • Maintain awareness of Defence, DVA, and veteran‑sector developments that affect our members

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Understanding of veterans’ policy, wellbeing, or service‑related issues.
  • Understanding of the Legislation affecting veterans presenting to DVA
  • Ability to interpret complex information and present it clearly.
  • Commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Estimated Time Commitment

3–4 hours per week.

APPVA – State Representative QLD, ACT

Position Type: Volunteer
Reports To: CEO

Purpose:
The State Representative acts as the primary APPVA liaison within their state or territory. They support members, promote APPVA initiatives, represent the organisation locally at state government, and ensure state‑level issues are communicated to the National Executive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent APPVA at state‑level activities, veteran events, government consultations, and community and commemorative engagements.
  • Act as the first point of contact for members within the state.
  • Identify emerging local issues affecting peacekeeper and peacemaker veterans and report them to the Current Issues Cell and National Executive.
  • Support recruitment, membership engagement, and local awareness campaigns.
  • Maintain strong relationships with RSLs, ESOs, community groups, and state government veteran offices.
  • Assist with coordination of state‑based commemorations, advocacy efforts, or wellbeing initiatives.
  • Provide regular activity reports back to the National Executive.
  • Uphold APPVA’s mission, values, and reputation within the veteran community.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of veteran issues, particularly relating to peacekeepers and peacemakers.
  • Confidence engaging with government, ESOs, media, and community stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage local initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Prior community leadership or advocacy experience (helpful but not essential).
