Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide

On 8 July 2021, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), issued Letters Patent, which established the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Mr Nick Kaldas APM, the Hon James Douglas QC, and Dr Peggy Brown AO have been appointed as Royal Commissioners. They are required to produce an interim report by 11 August 2022 and a final report by 15 June 2023.

The Letters Patent set out the Royal Commissioners’ terms of reference.

And you can make a submission- external site to the Royal Commission here.

APPVA Submission

The APPVA has made a submission to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide and has asked not to address the Commissioners in open forum until mid year.  This is a deliberate strategy because a lot of what has been said is common, and the majority of living veterans (particularly post 2000 serving veterans) feel that they have not been represented.  This will improve the content because we aim to represent a much wider audience than our membership.
