The Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans' Association welcomes the release of the Interim Report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide today. We thank the Commissioners for the sensitivity, care and diligence they have displayed to the veteran community, and we have no reason to disagree with anything in the report. We do feel that the root cause of the current situation is:

  • poor governance because veteran issues are only veteran issues if the Department of Veteran Affairs agrees they are.
  • a lack of accountability because claims performance is self-assessed by DVA with little scrutiny and we have found that with willing DVA public servants we can move claims through DVA quickly.
  • a myth exists that the veteran health and rehabilitation system is too complex and unique to change.
