The UN Mission in Support of East Timor (UNMISET) was established by UN resolution 1272/99 on 25 October 2000 and implemented on East Timor's Independence Day, 20 May 2002. Operation Citadel was established to replace Operation Tanager and to consolidate the achievements of the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) following East Timor's independence. Operation Citadel involved the post-independence deployment of Australian combat battalion groups (Ausbatt) to support the UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) Peacekeeping Force.
