Ceremonies to mark 60 years of Peacekeeping - 14 Sep 2007

Ceremonies will be held across the country today to mark the 60th anniversary of Australia's first peacekeeping mission.

The first mission was sent to Indonesia in 1947.

Victorian president of the Australian Peacekeeper's Association Matt Burke says a service at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance at 11:00am will be one of many across the country today to commemorate the anniversary.

"We've certainly contributed over 66,000 people in that time, in the 60 years, in 73 different conflicts, over 54 different countries," he said.

"I think Australia's got a very good reputation of being a very good peacekeeper and peacemaking nation, and is willing to make sure the world is a better place to live."
