VALE - 230718 SGT GRAHAM WILLIAM ROACH
(universally known as 'Roachy')
Sunday, 19 Jul 2009
After battling Leukemia, Graham passed away (peacefully) at Tweed Heads Hospital on Sun 7 Jun 09. His ashes were interred at Lismore Memorial Gardens alongside his wife, Maree Roach (nee White) Sun 19 Jul 09.
Enlisted in the ARA 2 Dec 81 and after Recruit Training, was allocated to The Royal Australian Infantry (RAINF). He served predominantly in 1 RAR, 8/9 RAR and additionally served in instructional postings at The Army Logistical Training Centre (ALTC) Wodonga, The Combined Arms Training Centre (CATC) Puckapunyal and his final ARA Posting being to The Land Warfare Detachment (LWC DET) Darwin before discharging on 7 Aug 06. After discharge, he returned to his hometown of Murwillumbah (NSW). Until his passing, Graham remained active with the GRES and served with A Coy 41 RNSWR.
During his time in the ARA, Graham saw service in SE Asia (two tours of duty) and also Active Service in Timor Leste with the 1 RAR Bn Group as a Platoon Sergeant.
His specialist trade within the Corps was as a Mortarman (Mortician) and his professionalism and knowledge in this trade received professional praise from all who served with him.
He was also known throughout the Corps as a bit of a 'character'. He loved a good natured practical joke (often at the expense of some poor unsuspecting young subaltern) and many of his 'antics' are very humorous and in a number of cases, quite legendary!!
Graham faced his final days and accepted the inevitable end with a courage and dignity that was admirable and so typical of his character.
Rest in Peace mate. Your Duty is done.
Your Brother in Law and your many other 'brothers'.
