TASKFORCE WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF CHILD ABUSE ROYAL COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING INTO THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE
The Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART) welcomes yesterday’s announcement that the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will be holding a public hearing in Sydney next month to inquire into the experiences of men and women who were sexually abused as children in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The hearing will enquire into the experiences of survivors of child sexual abuse of the following institutions operated by the ADF:
a. HMAS Leeuwin in the period 1960 to 1980
b. The Army Apprentice School Balcombe in the period 1970 to 1980, and
c. ADF Cadets in the period 2000 to present.
The Taskforce can provide any registered DART complainants who were sexually abused as children at the above institutions with their personal accounts of abuse previously submitted to the Taskforce. These accounts could be attached to their applications for leave to appear at the Royal Commission, reducing the requirement for complainants to document their distressing experiences.
Alternately, where a registered DART complainant who was sexually abused as a child at the above institutions wishes to provide information to the Royal Commission, the Taskforce could, with the complainant’s consent, provide their personal account directly to the Royal Commission.
If any Taskforce complainants with allegations of child sexual abuse at the above institutions wish to have their information provided to the Royal Commission, we encourage them to contact us at DART@ag.gov.au or on the free-call Hotline on 1800 424 991.
