Personal details of soldiers killed in Afghanistan in Helmand helicopter crash
It is with deep regret that the Australian Defence Force confirms that Lance Corporal Mervyn McDonald and Private Nathanael Galagher were killed on Operations in Afghanistan on 30 August 2012.
The Australian Special Forces soldiers from 2nd Commando Regiment were killed when an International Security Assistance Force helicopter crashed in Helmand province. The Australian Special Forces and their partnered Afghan National Security Force unit were participating in a targeted mission at the time of the incident.
Planning for the repatriation of the fallen Australian soldiers has begun although the date for their return to Australia has not yet been confirmed.
The families of Lance Corporal McDonald and Private Galagher are receiving support from Defence and have requested their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
