Op Aware 2 Rallies

My apologies for this very late notice but here are the confirmed details, issued by the Alliance of Defence Service Organisations (ADSO) for the rallies planned for this Friday, 17 August 2012.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WHILE THE ADSO HAS SUGGESTED THAT THESE RALLIES SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON MARGINAL ALP SEATS (INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS) AS WELL AS THE SEATS HELD BY THE GREENS AND THE INDEPENDENTS, MEMBERS WHO WISH TO CONDUCT A RALLY OUTSIDE THE ELECTORAL OFFICE OF THEIR LOCAL FEDERAL MEMBER/SENATOR, REGARDLESS OF POLITICAL PARTY, SHOULD NOT BE DISCOURAGED FROM DOING SO.

WHAT WE WANT IS PARTICIPATION AND IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC IF WE CAN HAVE A RALLY OUTSIDE EVERY FEDERAL ELECTORAL OFFICE, EVEN IF ONLY THREE MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN EACH RALLY.

IF MEMBERS ARE NOT COMFORTABLE IN PARTICIPATING IN A RALLY THEN PLEASE FORM A DEPUTATION TO DELIVER THE ADSO LETTER (TO BE ISSUED TONIGHT) TO THE OFFICE OF THE FEDERAL MEMBER/SENATOR.

ADSO HAS ESTABLISHED A NUMBER OF LOCAL ACTION GROUPS (LAGS) THAT WILL COORDINATE THESE RALLIES AND DEPUTATIONS IN THEIR AREAS.

HOWEVER THESE LAGS HAVE NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED IN EVERY FEDERAL ELECTORATE. CONSEQUENTLY MEMBERS, WHO ARE COMMITTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE RALLIES IN AREAS WHERE THERE IS NO LAG LEADER, WILL PROBABLY NOT KNOW WHO ELSE IS GOING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RALLY IN THEIR AREA.

THIS SHOULD NOT DISCOURAGE YOU FROM GOING DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL FEDERAL MEMBER'S OFFICE TO SEE WHO ELSE TURNS UP.

I APPRECIATE THAT THIS SOUNDS A BIT HIT AND MISS BUT UNTIL WE FORM THESE LAGS IN EVERY AREA WE ARE RELYING ON INDIVIDUALS TO TAKE THE LEAD. THAT IS THE NATURE OF ATTEMPTING TO ORGANISE RALLIES. IT IS HOPED THAT IF A NUMBER OF MEMBERS (HOPEFULLY SUPPORTED BY FAMILIES AND FRIENDS) DO TURN UP, THEY WILL EXCHANGE INFORMATION. CONTACT DETAILS, ETC SO THAT NEXT TIME WE WILL BE FAR BETTER ORGANISED.

BUT THIS IS YOUR FIGHT FOR A FAIR GO SO ARE YOU PREPARED TO GO TO THE OFFICE OF YOUR FEDERAL MEMBER/SENATOR AND JOIN OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE THERE? IF THERE IS NOBODY ELSE THERE, YOU CAN AT LEAST PERSONALLY DELIVER THE ADSO LETTER AND/OR YOUR OWN LETTER TO THE FEDERAL MEMBER'S OFFICE.

IT'S UP TO YOU.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE RALLIES MUST BE CIVIL. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC MUST NOT BE IMPEDED. NO ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. IF AN ELECTORAL OFFICE IS LOCATED IN A SHOPPING COMPLEX THEN THE RALLIES SHOULD BE HELD OUTSIDE THE COMPLEX. DO NOT BECOME INVOLVED IN VERBAL DISAGREEMENTS WITH MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO TURN PUBLIC OPINION AGAINST US SO THESE RALLIES/ASSEMBLIES SHOULD BE PEACEFUL, ORDERLY AND WELL-CONTROLLED.

In this second week of OP Aware 2 we need your help to take our campaign direct to all Federal MP electorate and Senators' offices. We will assemble to act in two concurrent ways:

1. A Rally of supporters at or near the Labor MP marginal electorate Offices, the Green MP Office (Melbourne), the Independents' electorate Offices and Labor, Green and Independent Senators' Offices.

2. A deputation of three people to hand deliver a formal ADSO letter to all other MPs and Senators at their electorate Offices. The letter from David Jamison,ADSO's national spokesperson, highlights two major issues:military superannuation indexation and the restoration of veterans' disability payment parity.

THE RALLY

When? - Friday 17 August 11.30 am 12.30 pm

Where? - At or near all marginal Labor Federal electorate and Senators' Offices

Why? - To protest to our Parliamentarians and to alert the public to our unfair and unjust treatment on military superannuation indexation and veterans' disability payments.

How? - Organised groups of about but not limited to ten people assemble to conduct a civil and peaceful protest. Placards and flyer/handout will be provided to these organised groups. They will carry placards, hand out flyers, explain our issues and encourage support. Our Action Group leaders will answer questions from the media and other authorities.

Who? - Any one can attend. To find out what electoral Offices we will be present at call Ted Chitham  for Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania, Ian Scott  for NSW, Geoffrey Schmidt for ACT, John Wilson for SA and NT and Ted McEvoy for WA. They will give you the relevant Leader's contact details.

Where we have no representation you may want to make up your own group. We will help you where we can with flyers, placard text and reinforcements. Dress for comfort and wear your service medals and or an item of military clothing eg., a cap.

The Flyer/Handout: You can download the flyer handout here

The Placards.

We plan on least five placards per group comprising the Flyer (front), the Graph (The one that appears on the home page) and your selection of any three or more of the following text.

1. MILITARY PENSIONS CPI INCREASE 48 CENTS/A WEEK. THAT'S GENEROUS SAYS THE GOVERNMENT. ???????

2. FAIR GO ? HELL NO

3. WE WANT WHAT WAS PROMISED

4. GOVERNMENT ADVOCATES A FAIR GO FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS - BUT EXCLUDES THE MILITARY?

5. VETS RIGHT TO FAIR INDEXATION DENIED - CPI INCREASE 0.1% = 48 CENTS A DAY

6. FAIR INDEXATION DENIED - SEE THE GRAPH - VETS ABANDONED

7. VETS DISABILITY PENSION ERODED - RESTORE PARITY NOW

THE DEPUTATION

When? Friday 17 August at noon

Where? At all other MP electorates and Senators' Offices

Why? To show our presence and delver a formal protest letter to the Parliamentarians.

How? By a small deputation to hand deliver the letter to the MP or in his/her absence the Senior Staff person. We want to save the 60 cents stamp costs which is more than our latest weekly indexation payment

Who? You - the volunteer. If you live in the electorate and are willing then tell your State representative (named above). The letter will be emailed to the volunteers for delivery.
