The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, today reiterated that information is readily available to help Queensland veterans affected by flooding, access support and financial assistance.

“The Queensland veteran community can access information on insurance, payments and counselling and I encourage those in flooded areas to take advantage of these services as soon as possible,” Mr Snowdon said.

Widespread flooding is taking its toll across extensive parts of Queensland, and with more than 61,000 veterans living in the State, we know that a number will be affected.

“Veterans who have had property damaged by the floods and are insured with Defence Service Homes Insurance are encouraged to contact 1300 552 662 to make a claim.”

To date 112 claims for assistance have been received by Defence Service Homes Insurance (as at 13/1/2011). These numbers are expected to grow in the coming weeks as people return to their properties.

“Veterans and their families in need of emotional support or counselling can contact The VVCS - Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service 24 hours a day on 1800 011 046,” Mr Snowdon said.

Mr Snowdon also reassured the Queensland veteran community that there would be no interruption to Department of Veterans’ Affairs services.

“Although we closed the Brisbane offices this week for the safety of our staff, services for Queensland Department of Veterans’ Affairs clients will continue.”
